Extracurricular Activities

Involvement in the enrichment of my program and in the community has been a top priority during my time at South Piedmont Community College. I'd like to introduce you to some of the activities that I've had the opportunity and pleasure to be involved in. I believe these experience have contributed to the richness of my quilt and has made it much more colorful.

SPCC Medical Sonography Club
Class of 2016

At the beginning of the sonography program, I was elected as the Class President and the President of the Medical Sonography Club for the Class of 2016. Along with the other board members and our advisor, I set up fundraisers that helped to raise money for our pinning ceremony, set up community service opportunities, and helped to organize our graduation and pinning ceremony. In April 2015 and April 2016, I was awarded Excellence in Engagement Awards from the SGA for my contributions to the club and the community.

From these experiences, I learned skills necessary to be an effective leader, how important it is to work as a team to create goals, and how to encourage others to participate in achieving our goals. These skills are important because it is something I can take with me after graduation where I will have to work with a team of sonographers and radiologists. If we all work together, we can be much more efficient and meet whatever goals we set our minds to!

Community Service

As the Sonography Club President, I participated in setting up community service projects to assist those in need in the community. Two major opportunities were the United Way Day of Caring and Meals on Wheels. My classmates and I were more than happy to dedicate our time and efforts to helping others.

These experiences were so valuable and I enjoyed them so much. Making a difference to others is always important and I think it is a great experience for those who want to work in the medical field. It reminds you to be caring and compassionate and that making a small difference in someone's life can really make a huge difference.

South Mecklenburg High School
Color Guard

In addition to my contributions to the Medical Sonography program, the Medical Sonography Club, and the community, I also volunteer my time and efforts as the Color Guard Director at South Mecklenburg High School in Charlotte, N.C. I have worked with this organization for the past 5 years. The Color Guard participates in dance routines and spins flags, rifles, and sabres. They practice several times a week and compete across North and South Carolina.

The students I teach are not involved with SPCC, but I feel that my time with them has taught me better organizational skills, better time management skills, how to be more patient, and how to be an effective leader. I believe that the skills I have gained by working with them will make me a more effective and efficient sonographer.
